Hey! I am Emily, the creator and maker behind Nāmaka. Welcome! Pull up a chair and make yourself at home...
I can't really put a finger on the exact date I started Nāmaka, but it was a gradual progression of creative discovery over the lat 3 years or so.
I have always been a bit of a magpie... I'm naturally drawn to shiny and sparkly things that catch my eye... I'm sure you are too!
Every morning I walk my pup Bronson on the local beach, it helps clear my head, and it's a perfect way to start the day. One day these shiny luminescent shards embedded in the sand, caught my eye, and I had to take a closer look... from then on, that was it, I was hooked.
These shells come from Abalone, a mollusc, which I have never come across in the UK, where I grew up. I find them completely mesmerising, washed up on to the shore like a little precious gift from the ocean.
I searched every single day, for new pieces, and pretty quickly I became quite obsessed, getting a rush of pure joy finding each piece, as they are so completely unique.
Each piece has it's own character. The shells that I find are all fascinating to me, they may have smooth edges, or dimples where the shell was a home for tiny creatures... it maybe broken from being bashed against rocks... sometimes I find whole ones of varying colours and sizes. They are all precious to me, and I treasure each one, as I take them home to clean and categorise.
I didn't know what to do with my discoveries for a long time, I was just happy collecting them... but over time, I wanted to share my joy, and create something with them.
In my career I have worked as a fashion designer for over 10 years, designing womens clothing, for brands and retailers all over the world, but this has been the chance to use those skills I have learnt in a different way, and make something more tangible with my own hands, from scratch.
Over time, and through trying to make things in a hit and miss kind of way... gradually Nāmaka was born.
I use the name Nāmaka, as not only I love the word, and how it sounds - but in Hawaiian mythology, Nāmaka appears as the Hawaiian goddess of the sea or water spirit. I use that word to honour the gifts and joy that the ocean gives me in my life.
As every piece of shell is unique, each Nāmaka piece is also unique, and always one of a kind, never to be repeated.
I believe that complete transparency, is the way forward - so here’s what you need to know:

Each Nāmaka piece is carefully hand made by me, and each style is one of one. I believe that this is a more responsible way of creating, as I only use materials for what is needed to be produced. Pieces are available until available materials are finished, and materials are held in limited supply.
